The Bug Book
Another great book on bugging and being bugged! It seems that lately some industry professionals have been writing books, and it's about time they got the TRUTH out! As an Electrical Engineer, I read many books on this subject and just shake my head in wonder that some of these books ever sell, but this is one that I am totally in agreement with!
Mr. Shannon obviously knows his stuff, and has written The Bug Book so that it can be understood by the novice, yet enjoyed by us "propeller heads" too! The stories of bugging are informative and sometimes funny, but they also give you insight into the world of bugging. I believe that some of the methods and other things he discusses have never been seen in print before now.
Of course, this book is for Academic study only, cause if you get caught actually doing some of the stuff discussed in this excellent book... (all together now) "SERIOUS Jail Time!"
EVERY chapter is chock full of great stuff, sections are ogten broken into subsections for clarity or expansion of a technique. If I could ONLY buy one "Bug Book", this would be my choice (but Thankfully I can buy more than one, cause lately other good ones are out there too!

The Phone Book
One of the keys to survival in the coming years will be the ability to control technology; control in this case entails not only the constructive use of technology, but the ability to limit the use of technology against yourself as well.
Arguably, one of the most important- and consequently one of the most abused- technologies in history is the telephone. From its inception, the telephone has radically changed the world, since the evolution of our current information-based economy is the direct result of the telephone's ability to move information instantaneously.

From the early days of telephone phreaking in the 1950's, enterprising individuals have sought to exercise control over the world's largest computer. Today, the telephone systems and its progeny are incredibly complicated, and it is this complication that makes people most vulnerable to theft of their time, privacy, and even property. If you want the tools to help you take back some of this control, I would urge you to check out The Phone Book.

The book begins at the beginning: detailing the anatomy of the telephone company (telco). You'll learn the exotica of 66 blocks, demarcs, REMOBS, and all the points in between. With this background, Shannon moves into the specifics of land-line telephones, including wiretaps (how its done and how to prevent it), how bugs work, phone phreaking (far too little detail in this section), and how to end telephone harassement.
We then move on to an extensive discussion on wireless technology, including a clear explanation of how cell phones work, and how wireless devices such as cell phones and cordless phones can be monitored (and in the case of cell phones, cloned).
The final third of the book covers the highest technology including data encryption, van Eck hacking, clipper chips and Internet spying. All of the topics are covered in a clear, but detailed, manner, accompanied by copious illustrations.

The back of this tome includes an extensive resource section on where to obtain the necessary goodies to protect yourself, necessary phone numbers and addresses, and a massive collection of cell phone frequencies to use as you see fit. Although there is no index (a disappointment) there is a nice glossary of terms. All in all, this is one of the most useful (and interesting) books to come from Paladin in some time.

Now for the only bad part: this softcover book costs $40.00 plus shipping. Worth it? Absolutely! The book is large format, information-dense, and engagingly written; in short, a lot of value for the money.
